Without another moment of hesitation, I take one long, slow sip.

The malted liquid glides across my tongue, my taste buds igniting. It’s warm, and as it makes its way down my throat and into the pit of my stomach, a familiar feeling overwhelms me.

I bring the glass back to my mouth, finishing off the rest. I slam it on the counter and call the bartender back over.

“I’d like another one. This time make it a double.”

“Yes, sir.”

When he turns around and begins making my second drink, I look over my right shoulder.

I’m facing away from the entrance to the kitchen. The bar is located in the center of the restaurant, basically making one giant circle in the middle of the dining room. I’m scanning the room for Logan, hoping to catch him emerging from the kitchen at some point. Or at least before the whiskey starts to take effect.

But I can’t wait to see Logan. The bartender doesn’t even get the chance to place my drink down in front of me before I swipe it from his hand, immediately drinking half of it. I ignore the way he scoffs and raises his eyebrows.

He can go fuck off.

Twenty minutes later, I’m on my third glass of whiskey when I finally see Logan. The kitchen door swings open as he and another waiter emerge.

He’s dressed the same as he was last night. White button-up shirt tucked into black dress pants. Only now, he’s carrying his black apron in his arm, wrapped around his server book. He looks like an asshole—everything from his long brown hair tied back into a bun to the light scruff lining his jaw. He looks like he crawled out of the dumpster from behind the restaurant.

Breaking away from watching him, I turn my attention back to the bar, hoping the bartender has refilled my drink without having to ask again.

I grin when I see the caramel-colored liquid patiently waiting for me. Throwing the drink back, my throat growing numb to the usual burn, I finish it in one gulp, just as my phone vibrates on the bar counter.

I loosen the tie around my neck, watching my phone move across the glazed wood. After I left the coffee shop, I stopped by my apartment to shower and change into a fresh suit. It felt wrong to stay in sweatpants, and I knew I needed to get out and do something to take my mind off Lena and her shit secrets. Logan was the first thing that came to mind.

Lena’s name flashes across the screen of my phone just as I feel the whiskey burning in my bloodstream. It feels as if the whiskey has now become a part of me, consuming me.

Smirking, I finally pick up my phone. Pressing it to my ear, I swing around in my barstool, resting my back against the bar. I rest my arm back onto the counter, scanning the dining room for Logan again.

I find him standing near the host stand, chatting with two other waiters.
